Forelle rigs are standard configurations ideal for general trout fishing with shorter leaders (70–150cm). Big Trout offers extended 120cm leaders for larger trout and increased stealth. Big Trout Extreme has the longest 180cm leader for maximum finesse and avoiding detection. Trout Paste Haken are optimized for paste and dough baits with short (70cm) or very long (250cm) leaders.
Hook size depends on your bait type and target fish size. Size #6–#8 works well with smaller baits and for natural presentation. Size #10–#12 is versatile for most trout fishing situations. Size #14 is best for fine-wire presentations with small dough or paste baits. Generally, use smaller hooks in clear water and when fishing pressured water, and larger hooks when visibility is low or for livebait applications.
Shorter leaders (70cm) provide better control and are ideal for shallow water or when fish are actively feeding. Medium leaders (120–150cm) suit most situations and reduce the visibility of your main line while maintaining good bait control. Longer leaders (180–250cm) excel in clear water where fish are wary or in deeper venues, allowing your bait to drift away from the main line and appear more natural.
These rigs are primarily designed for stillwater trout fishing (lakes and ponds). While they can be used in slow-moving rivers, the monofilament leaders and short-range hook placement are optimized for lake conditions. For river trout fishing, you may want dedicated river-specific rigs.
