SP5 is intended for light trout lure fishing, SP10 for perch and trout, SP20 for perch, trout and zander, SP30 for perch and zander with softbaits and hardbaits, and SP40 for pike and zander. Weight rises from 176 g to 278 g across the sizes, so compare weight and line capacity alongside the intended use.
Yes, all five models support both. Slow Oscillation provides even line lay, and the Rocket Line Management™ System and Rocket spool lip design™ control line handling and release. Choose by the capacity at your line diameter, as mono and braid capacities are not interchangeable.
Both have a 5.8:1 gear ratio and 6.4 kg maximum drag. SP30 weighs 252 g, retrieves 64 cm per turn and holds 130 m of 0.30 mm mono. SP40 weighs 278 g, retrieves 67 cm and holds 185 m at that diameter. Choose SP40 for its greater line capacity or SP30 for lower weight.
Yes, every model is specified for right- or left-hand retrieve and has a front drag. You can choose the reel size for your fishing rather than needing a different model for your preferred handle side.
SP20, SP30 and SP40 are explicitly supplied without line and without a spare spool, so you need to spool your chosen line before fishing. The family description also mentions a separate SpiderWire Dura4 pre-spooled version. Inclusion is not specified for SP5 and SP10, so check the selected version rather than assuming those accessories are included.

The Abu Garcia MAX X spinning reels cover light trout fishing through to lure fishing for perch, zander and pike. Three ball bearings and one roller bearing provide smooth operation, while the lightweight graphite body and rotor keep weight down during active fishing. All five sizes accept monofilament and braided line and have a front drag and a handle that can be fitted on either side.
Slow Oscillation distributes line evenly across the spool. The Rocket Line Management™ System improves control with different line types, and Rocket spool lip design™ controls line leaving the spool during casting. These features support both mono and braid setups. The machined aluminum spool provides strength without excess weight, and the Everlast™ bail system is designed for improved durability. The reels are red and black.
SP5 is the smallest option for light trout lure fishing. SP10 is intended for perch and trout, SP20 for perch, trout and zander, SP30 for perch and zander with softbaits and hardbaits, and SP40 for pike and zander. Compare the actual line capacity as well as the reel size when choosing your setup.
| Model | Size | Weight | Gear ratio | Retrieve per turn | Maximum drag | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | MAX X SP5 | 5 | 176 g | 5.2:1 | 52 cm | 2.9 kg | | MAX X SP10 | 10 | 207 g | 5.2:1 | 53 cm | 3 kg | | MAX X SP20 | 20 | 227 g | 5.2:1 | 61 cm | 6.4 kg | | MAX X SP30 | 30 | 252 g | 5.8:1 | 64 cm | 6.4 kg | | MAX X SP40 | 40 | 278 g | 5.8:1 | 67 cm | 6.4 kg |
The smaller models reduce reel weight, while SP30 and SP40 offer a higher gear ratio and more line pickup per handle turn. SP40 holds more line than SP30 at the same mono diameter but weighs 26 g more. The maximum drag also increases from SP5 and SP10 to SP20, SP30 and SP40.
Monofilament capacities are given as length at diameter. SP5 holds 140 m at 0.15 mm or 100 m at 0.18 mm. SP10 holds 170 m at 0.18 mm or 140 m at 0.20 mm. SP20 holds 220 m at 0.20 mm, 120 m at 0.25 mm or 100 m at 0.30 mm. SP30 holds 165 m at 0.25 mm, 150 m at 0.28 mm or 130 m at 0.30 mm. SP40 holds 265 m at 0.25 mm, 185 m at 0.30 mm or 135 m at 0.35 mm.
Specified braid capacities are 170 m at 0.15 mm for SP20, 160 m at 0.17 mm for SP30 and 190 m at 0.20 mm for SP40. Use the capacity for your chosen line type and diameter rather than comparing lengths alone.
SP20, SP30 and SP40 have felt drag material and Instant Anti-Reverse, which prevents backward handle movement. These three models are specified for freshwater, are supplied without line and do not include a spare spool. A separate pre-spooled version with SpiderWire Dura4 braided line is also mentioned for the family, so check the version rather than assuming line is included.
