The HS models have a higher gear ratio, which means more line is retrieved per handle turn. For example, the 4500HS has a 7.0:1 ratio and 117 cm retrieve per turn, compared to 6.2:1 and 102 cm on the standard 4500. HS models share the same weight, drag and spool capacity as their standard counterparts, making them ideal when faster lure retrieval is needed.
For coastal lure fishing targeting species like sea bass or sea trout, the 2500 or 3500 models are a good starting point. The 2500 weighs just 312 g and handles lines up to 0.31 mm mono, while the 3500 at 394 g offers more line capacity and a higher max drag of 13.6 kg for larger fish. If you prefer a fast retrieve, consider the 2500HS.
Yes, the Slammer IV is specifically designed for saltwater. It features an IPX6-sealed body and spool, a hydrophobic line roller bearing, stainless steel bearings, and a sealed drag system to protect internal components from corrosion and water ingress.
The 2500 and 2500HS use HT-100 carbon fibre drag washers providing up to 9.0 kg of drag. All other sizes (3500 through 10500) feature the sealed Slammer drag system with Dura-Drag technology, offering max drag from 13.6 kg up to 27.2 kg depending on size.
Sizes 2500 through 5500 (including HS variants) feature an automatic bail trip. Sizes 6500 through 10500 (including the 8500HS) have a manual bail trip, giving the angler more control when fishing with heavy tackle offshore.
For large offshore species, the 8500, 8500HS or 10500 models are recommended. They offer 22.6 to 27.2 kg of max drag and can hold substantial amounts of heavy braid. The 8500HS adds a faster 5.3:1 ratio for quicker retrieves when needed. The 10500 is the most powerful with 27.2 kg drag and 1215 g weight for the toughest fights.

The Penn Slammer IV spinning reel line builds on Penn's proven saltwater pedigree, delivering IPX6-sealed construction and a redesigned drag system across sizes 2500 to 10500.
Every Slammer IV features a full metal body and sideplate with IPX6-rated sealing on both body and spool. This keeps saltwater, sand and debris out of the internal components, extending reel life even under harsh offshore conditions.
Sizes 3500 through 10500 use the sealed Slammer drag system with Dura-Drag technology, offering a wide range of usable drag pressure with bearing-supported smoothness. Max drag ranges from 13.6 kg on the 3500/4500 models up to 27.2 kg on the 10500. The 2500 models use HT-100 carbon fibre drag washers with 9.0 kg max drag.
All models share CNC-machined brass main gears for precise, durable meshing under heavy loads. An 8+1 stainless steel bearing system and a hydrophobic line roller bearing round out the drivetrain.
The line-up covers a wide spectrum: compact 2500-class reels weighing 312 g for coastal lure fishing, mid-range 3500 to 5500 models (394–629 g) for versatile saltwater spinning, and heavy-duty 6500 to 10500 reels (686–1215 g) for offshore targets. Standard gear ratios range from 4.2:1 (10500) to 6.2:1 (2500/3500/4500). High-speed (HS) variants are available in 2500, 4500 and 8500 sizes with ratios of 7.0:1, 7.0:1 and 5.3:1 respectively.
Sizes 2500 through 5500 have an automatic bail trip, while sizes 6500 through 10500 use a manual bail trip. All models feature an aluminium spool, instant anti-reverse and a right/left convertible handle. Sizes 3500 and above include a spare EVA handle knob.
