The 2500 and 3500 are described for coastal sea trout, sea bass and cod. The 2500 weighs 312 g with 9 kg maximum drag, while the 3500 weighs 394 g with 13.6 kg. The 4500 versions cover pollack, coalfish and cod, and sizes 5500 upwards also list halibut. Compare line capacity as well as drag, because the larger options weigh more, up to 1215 g for the 10500.
HS models have higher gearing than the same standard size, with unchanged stated weight, maximum drag and line capacity. The 2500HS retrieves 99 cm rather than 84 cm, the 6500HS 122 cm rather than 107 cm, and the 8500HS 127 cm rather than 107 cm per turn. The 4500HS has a 7.0:1 ratio instead of 6.2:1. Choose HS when faster line recovery matters, especially over distance or from depth.
No. Both 2500 versions use HT-100 carbon fibre drag washers, while sizes 3500–10500 use the sealed Slammer drag with Dura-Drag. Sizes 2500–5500 have automatic bail trip, whereas 6500–10500 use manual bail closure. The size you choose therefore changes both the drag system and, from 6500 upwards, how you close the bail after casting.
Yes. All versions allow right- or left-hand handle positioning and have stated capacities for monofilament and braid. They are supplied without line and without a spare spool, so check the variant's capacity for your chosen line and load the aluminium spool yourself. Sizes 3500–10500 also include a spare EVA handle knob.

The PENN Slammer IV is a saltwater spinning reel family for coastal lure fishing and active sea fishing. Its IPX6-sealed body and spool help limit water ingress, while the front drag provides controlled resistance during the fight. Sizes 2500 and 3500 cover coastal fishing for sea trout, sea bass and cod. The larger models are described for pollack, coalfish and cod, with sizes 5500 and above also intended for halibut.
A full metal body and sideplate support the gearing under load. CNC Gear Technology with a brass main gear transfers the handle's rotation to the retrieve, while an 8+1 stainless steel bearing system supports smooth operation. A hydrophobic line roller bearing helps repel water at the point where the line runs onto the spool. All versions have an aluminium spool, instant anti-reverse and a black finish with gold details.
Both 2500 versions use HT-100™ carbon fibre drag washers and offer 9 kg maximum drag. Sizes 3500–10500 use the sealed, bearing-supported Slammer® drag system with Dura-Drag™, redesigned for a wider usable drag range and smooth adjustment. Maximum drag rises from 13.6 kg on the 3500 and 4500 models to 27.2 kg on the 10500. Choose by the line capacity and drag needed for your fishing, not by size alone.
The table lists each supplier model code, gear ratio, reel weight, maximum drag and one stated monofilament capacity. Full monofilament and braid capacities are given in the variant specifications.
| Model code | Ratio | Weight | Max drag | Mono capacity | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | SLAIV2500 | 6.2:1 | 312 g | 9 kg | 235 m / 0.23 mm | | SLAIV2500HS | 7.0:1 | 312 g | 9 kg | 235 m / 0.23 mm | | SLAIV3500 | 6.2:1 | 394 g | 13.6 kg | 330 m / 0.23 mm | | SLAIV4500 | 6.2:1 | 425 g | 13.6 kg | 390 m / 0.25 mm | | SLAIV4500HS | 7.0:1 | 425 g | 13.6 kg | 390 m / 0.25 mm | | SLAIV5500 | 5.6:1 | 629 g | 18.1 kg | 390 m / 0.28 mm | | SLAIV6500 | 5.6:1 | 686 g | 18.1 kg | 355 m / 0.33 mm | | SLAIV7500 | 4.7:1 | 814 g | 22.6 kg | 450 m / 0.36 mm | | SLAIV8500 | 4.7:1 | 870 g | 22.6 kg | 415 m / 0.46 mm | | SLAIV8500HS | 5.3:1 | 870 g | 22.6 kg | 415 m / 0.46 mm | | SLAIV10500 | 4.2:1 | 1215 g | 27.2 kg | 395 m / 0.56 mm | | SLAIV6500HS | 6.2:1 | 686 g | 18.1 kg | 355 m / 0.33 mm |
The 2500 versions are the lightest options and are described for coastal fishing with hardbaits and softbaits. The 3500 adds capacity and drag at a higher weight. The 4500 versions are intended for active saltwater lure fishing for pollack, coalfish and cod. From 5500 upwards, the supplier also names halibut and larger sea fish. Higher capacity and maximum drag come with more weight, reaching 1215 g on the 10500.
HS (high-speed) versions have higher gearing than the corresponding standard size, without changing the stated weight, maximum drag or line capacity. The 2500 retrieves 84 cm per handle turn, compared with 99 cm for the 2500HS. The 3500 retrieves 94 cm, the 4500 102 cm and the 5500 99 cm. The 6500 retrieves 107 cm, compared with 122 cm for the 6500HS. The 7500 retrieves 97 cm. The 8500 retrieves 107 cm, compared with 127 cm for the 8500HS, and the 10500 retrieves 109 cm. Faster line recovery is useful when retrieving from depth or distance, as described for the larger HS models. The 4500HS has a 7.0:1 ratio versus 6.2:1 on the 4500.
The handle can be fitted for right- or left-hand retrieve. Sizes 2500–5500 have automatic bail trip, while sizes 6500–10500 require manual bail closure. This changes how you resume the retrieve after casting. A spare EVA handle knob is supplied with sizes 3500–10500. No spare spool is included, and the reels are not pre-spooled, so choose and load your own monofilament or braid using the capacity specifications.
