Thread the inline butter spoon onto your main line, then attach a swivel at the end. Tie your flatfish rig with long-shank hooks to the swivel. Bait with ragworm, lugworm, mussel, or soft plastics. Cast far and drag slowly along the bottom, pausing occasionally to let curious flatfish take.
Lead-free designs are environmentally responsible and legally required in some regions like Scandinavia. They offer the same effective sand-stirring action as traditional butter spoons while complying with modern conservation regulations.
Choose the heaviest weight that still allows you to maintain bottom contact with your setup. The 80g option works well in moderate to strong currents and deeper water, while lighter options are better for slower areas and shallow water.

The Zebco Flatty Teaser Inline Butter Spoon – these lead-free inline butter spoons are designed for flatfish (plaice, flounder) fishing. Use these inline butter spoons for flatfish of all species across various fishing regions including the North Sea, Baltic Sea, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland.
A lead-free butter spoon attractor fished in-line ahead of your flatfish rig. This lead-free inline butter spoon setup is also permitted during Scandinavian holidays where modern fishing regulations prohibit lead, helping protect the environment.
Using these inline butter spoons is straightforward. Slide the inline butter spoon onto your main line and tie a swivel at the end of the line. Attach your flatfish rig with long-shank hooks – long-shank hooks are essential because flatfish have relatively small mouths. You can use either a dedicated flatfish trace with flatfish hooks or a long-shank eel hook. Rig your hooks with flatfish baits such as ragworm, lugworm, fish pieces, shrimp, crab, or mussel. Soft plastics like twisters or worm imitations also work well. Cast the entire rig out and slowly drag it along the bottom. The inline butter spoon stirs up sand, which attracts curious flatfish toward your bait. They investigate and readily take the offering. Occasional pauses increase your chances of a strike.
Butter spoon weight strategy is simple: as light as possible, as heavy as necessary. Choose your butter spoon weight so you maintain bottom contact without the spoon spinning uselessly in the water. For color selection, we recommend bright colors in turbid water and natural tones in clear water.
Butter spoon fishing is highly effective, and you'll often land several flatfish in quick succession. We fish butter spoons regularly and have landed many beautiful flatfish using this method.
