The weight determines your casting distance and how much bait you can present. Heavier models (20g) cast further and hold larger baits. Thread your main line through the bombard's center or loop (if provided), then tie on a 1.5–2 metre monofilament or fluorocarbon leader. Attach your chosen bait rig to the end of the leader. This arrangement allows the bombard to carry the bait to depth while the leader provides natural movement and presentation.
Bombards work year-round, but are most effective in spring and autumn when trout are active throughout the water column. In summer heat, they excel at reaching cooler mid-water zones where trout retreat midday. Winter trolling with a slow retrieve near the bottom can also be productive with heavier bombards.
No special maintenance is needed. After each trip, rinse with fresh water to remove salt (if saltwater fishing) and allow to dry naturally. Store in a cool, dry place. Inspect for cracks or damage before use and replace if needed.
