Compare line capacity and weight first. JAW-20 weighs 199 g and holds 140 m of 0.20 mm line, while JAW-30 weighs 233 g and holds 200 m of 0.25 mm. JAW-40 and JAW-45 offer 8 and 9 kg maximum drag. JAW-55 holds 300 m of 0.30 mm line and has 14 kg maximum drag, but weighs 422 g. Match these differences to your rod, line and method.
Not on its own. JAW-40 and JAW-45 both have a 5.0:1 ratio, but retrieve 85 and 79 cm per turn respectively. JAW-55 retrieves 83 cm with a 4.5:1 ratio. Compare centimetres per turn when deciding how much line you want to take up with each handle rotation.
JAW-40 and JAW-45 are described for light sea fishing, and JAW-55 for saltwater and brackish-water spinning and jigging. Their graphite bodies and rotors and stainless steel bail wires are corrosion-resistant. Choose by capacity and weight, then clean and dry the reel after saltwater use rather than treating corrosion resistance as maintenance-free protection.
All five models use multi-disc Japanese oiled felt drag washers for even resistance when line is taken. The 3 ball bearings, 1 roller bearing, brass pinion and RESII rotor balancing support smooth winding with reduced vibration. Select the model's maximum drag for your setup and check the drag's function before fishing.
JAW-30 is described for inline spinners, softbaits and wobblers. JAW-20 and JAW-40 are described for predator spinning, JAW-45 for light spinning, and JAW-55 for spinning and jigging. Mono and braid compatibility is explicitly stated for JAW-55. Use the model's diameter/length capacity figures to plan spool filling, rather than treating maximum drag as a line-capacity rating.

The Okuma JAW family comprises spinning reels for active predator fishing, with additional bottom-fishing and coastal uses stated for individual models. Multi-disc drag systems with Japanese oiled felt washers provide even resistance when a fish takes line. The five models differ in weight, line capacity, maximum drag and retrieve, so choose by your rod, line and fishing method rather than model number alone.
All models have 3 ball bearings and 1 roller bearing, a precision-machined brass pinion gear and RESII (Rotor Equalizing System), a computer-balanced rotor system. The bearings and brass pinion support a smooth retrieve, while rotor balancing reduces vibration during repeated lure retrieves.
The corrosion-resistant graphite body and rotor, graphite sideplates and corrosion-resistant stainless steel bail wire resist exposure to moisture. The machined, anodized aluminium spool holds the line. JAW-20 and JAW-30 additionally have a two-tone spool finish, a rigid metal handle arm, CFR (Cyclonic Flow Rotor) and infinite Quick Set anti-reverse, which prevents backward handle movement. These two models are described as front-drag reels.

JAW-20 is the lightest option and is described for perch, trout, zander and pike spinning. JAW-30 adds line capacity and maximum drag at a higher weight. Its stated lure uses include inline spinners, softbaits and wobblers for zander, pike and perch.
JAW-40 is described for perch, pike and trout in rivers and lakes, light bottom fishing and light sea fishing from shore or a boat, including sea trout and cod. It has the highest retrieve per turn in the family, taking up more line with each handle turn than JAW-45 despite their identical gear ratios.
JAW-45 offers greater capacity for thicker line and 9 kg maximum drag, but weighs more than JAW-40 and retrieves less line per turn. Its stated uses include light spinning, bottom fishing, shore fishing and light sea fishing, as well as coarse and predator fishing.
JAW-55 has the greatest line capacity and maximum drag, with a substantial increase in weight. It is described for spinning and jigging for pike, zander and perch at rivers, coasts and estuaries, including saltwater and brackish water. Its spool accepts mono and braid. The listed spool codes are JAW-45-SPOOL for JAW-45 and JAW-55-SPOOL for JAW-55.
Corrosion-resistant parts do not remove the need for maintenance. Clean the reel after saltwater use, dry it and store it in a dry place. Check the drag, handle, spool and line guide before fishing, secure the reel firmly to the rod and follow the manufacturer's servicing instructions. Keep fingers, hair and clothing away from moving parts. The reel is fishing equipment, not a toy, and children should use it only with adult supervision.
