The Bombarde runs at 1–2.5 metres, targeting trout that feed in mid-water zones. This depth is particularly productive during spring, summer, and early autumn when trout actively hunt in mid-layers rather than on the bottom.
Start with 10–12 g for typical lake conditions. Use lighter weights (8 g) for calm days and shorter casts. Choose heavier weights (18–24 g) for windy conditions or when you need to reach distant hotspots. The weight affects both casting distance and sink rate.
Spiral-wound baits and trout dough are ideal. They stay secure on the trace and move naturally as the bombarde fishes. The system also works well with live baits and small livebait presentations when trolled gently.
The Bombarde excels in still waters: trout lakes, reservoirs, and ponds where you can troll or static-fish. River use is less common because the current affects the controlled depth fishing. Still-water environments let you maximize the mid-depth presentation.
While designed for trout, the Bombarde can work for pike and zander in similar mid-water presentations. The 1–2.5 m running depth is less suitable for deep-water species. Consider species-specific float systems for optimal results with other fish.
