Start with line capacity and weight. The 750 weighs 173 g and holds 100 m of 0.18 mm mono, while the 4000 weighs 258 g and holds 185 m of 0.30 mm mono. The 2000 and 2500 have 3 and 3.1 kg maximum drag, while the 3000 and 4000 offer 6.4 kg. Compare capacity at your intended diameter before choosing the weight and drag you need.
Yes. Every size has a machined aluminium braid-ready spool designed for a direct connection without slipping. Listed braid capacities range from 150 m of 0.10 mm on the 750 to 190 m of 0.20 mm on the 4000, so choose the size to suit your line diameter.
No. All have a 5.2:1 gear ratio, but retrieve per turn is 53 cm on the 750, 64 cm on the 2000, 68 cm on the 2500, 64 cm on the 3000 and 78 cm on the 4000. Compare these figures if the amount of line retrieved with each handle turn matters to your lure presentation.
The handle supports right- or left-hand use on every size and has soft-touch knobs for grip and comfort. No spare spool is included, so the supplied spool is the one available for loading your chosen line.
The manufacturer specifies freshwater use. Stainless steel bearings are listed, but saltwater suitability is not established, so choose the Max SX for freshwater spinning rather than assuming it is a coastal reel.

The Abu Garcia Max SX is a black spinning reel for freshwater lure fishing. Inspired by the Revo® and Zenon™ spinning reel series, its asymmetric graphite frame and rotor form a lightweight, compact platform. Six stainless steel ball bearings and one roller bearing provide smooth operation when retrieving lures.
The compact V-Rotor reduces rotor weight and start-up inertia, helping the rotor start turning with little resistance. The V-Spool design reduces spool size and weight. Rocket Line Management™ helps control different types of fishing line, while Rocket Spool Lip Design™ controls line leaving the spool during the cast.
The machined aluminium spool is braid-ready, so braided line can be tied directly to it without slipping. The aluminium handle has co-moulded soft-touch knobs for grip and comfort and can be used on the right or left. Instant Anti-Reverse prevents backward rotation. All sizes have a front drag with oil-felt drag material and a 5.2:1 gear ratio. No spare spool is included.
Compare weight, maximum drag, retrieve per handle turn and capacity rather than gear ratio alone. The 750 is the lightest option and has the slowest line retrieve. The 2000 adds capacity and retrieves more line per turn with only a small increase in maximum drag. The 2500 is described for smaller to medium-sized target fish and offers more capacity and a faster retrieve than the 2000, with a modest increase in weight and drag. The 3000 is described for medium-sized lures and stronger target fish. It is only 3 g heavier than the 2500 but has substantially more maximum drag and a slower retrieve. With 0.25 mm mono, the 3000 holds 165 m compared with 120 m on the 2500. The listed braid capacities use different diameters, 160 m of 0.17 mm on the 3000 versus 170 m of 0.15 mm on the 2500, so their lengths are not directly comparable. The 4000 combines the largest capacities and fastest retrieve with the same maximum drag as the 3000, at a higher weight.
| Size | Weight | Maximum drag | Retrieve per turn | Monofilament capacity (m/mm) | Braid capacity (m/mm) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | 750 | 173 g | 2.9 kg | 53 cm | 140/0.15, 100/0.18, 90/0.20 | 150/0.10 | | 2000 | 213 g | 3 kg | 64 cm | 170/0.18, 140/0.20, 90/0.25 | 135/0.12 | | 2500 | 227 g | 3.1 kg | 68 cm | 220/0.20, 120/0.25, 100/0.30 | 170/0.15 | | 3000 | 230 g | 6.4 kg | 64 cm | 165/0.25, 150/0.28, 130/0.30 | 160/0.17 | | 4000 | 258 g | 6.4 kg | 78 cm | 265/0.25, 185/0.30, 135/0.35 | 190/0.20 |
Capacity entries pair line length in metres with diameter in millimetres. Choose the size whose listed capacity matches your intended line diameter, then compare the weight, drag and retrieve for your setup.
