Choose the 300LP for lower weight at 265 g, with 9 kg maximum drag and 220 m of 0.32 mm mono capacity. The 400LP increases those figures to 366 g, 11.7 kg and 270 m. Both retrieve 64 cm per turn, so the main trade-off is weight against line reserve and maximum drag, not the stated retrieve distance.
Yes, both are described for casting and trolling large lures for big pike in freshwater. They combine Duragear™ brass gearing with a 95 mm handle and oversized soft-touch knobs for retrieving large baits. No numerical lure-weight range is supplied, so the reel description alone does not establish a specific casting-weight limit.
Both variants have the handle on the left and are supplied without pre-spooled line or a spare spool. Choose them for left-hand retrieve and add your own line before use. Both mono and braid capacities are specified, with more capacity on the 400LP at every listed diameter.
No. MagTrax™ is the magnetic casting brake that controls spool rotation during the cast. Power Stack Carbon Matrix™ is the fish-fighting drag, adjusted with the star drag. Use the casting brake for casting control and the star drag for line release under load, rather than treating them as one adjustment.

The Abu Garcia MAX5 LP-L is a left-hand low-profile baitcasting reel for freshwater fishing with large lures, whether casting or trolling for big pike. Its Duragear™ brass gearing handles the retrieve, while the 95 mm aluminium handle and oversized co-moulded soft-touch knobs provide a comfortable grip when repeatedly working large baits.
The magnetic MagTrax™ Braking System controls the spool during casting. It is separate from the Power Stack Carbon Matrix™ Drag System, which controls line release under load when fighting fish. The star drag provides the drag adjustment, with a maximum of 9 kg on the 300LP and 11.7 kg on the 400LP. Both reels have a 4+1 bearing system and instant anti-reverse, which prevents backward handle rotation.
Both versions have a graphite frame and side plates, plus an aluminium spool. The handle is on the left, so choose this family if you retrieve with your left hand. Neither version is pre-spooled or supplied with a spare spool, so you need to add your chosen line before fishing. Capacity figures for both monofilament and braid are listed below.
The MAX5LP-L300 weighs 265 g and has a 6.4:1 gear ratio. Choose it when lower reel weight matters more than extra line capacity or maximum drag. The MAX5LP-L400 weighs 366 g and has a 5.3:1 gear ratio, greater line capacity and 11.7 kg maximum drag. It gives you more line reserve and a higher drag ceiling at the cost of 101 g extra weight. Both are specified with 64 cm of line retrieve per handle turn, despite their different gear ratios. Both serve the same large-lure pike applications, and the 400 is also described for zander fishing.
| Specification | 300LP | 400LP | | --- | --- | --- | | Gear ratio | 6.4:1 | 5.3:1 | | Reel weight | 265 g | 366 g | | Maximum drag | 9 kg | 11.7 kg | | Retrieve per turn | 64 cm | 64 cm | | Mono capacity at 0.32 mm | 220 m | 270 m | | Mono capacity at 0.35 mm | 190 m | 230 m | | Mono capacity at 0.38 mm | 155 m | 190 m | | Braid capacity at 0.29 mm | 285 m | 350 m | | Braid capacity at 0.36 mm | 215 m | 260 m | | Braid capacity at 0.41 mm | 150 m | 185 m |
Compare capacity at the diameter of the line you intend to use rather than comparing reel size alone. The stated application is freshwater fishing with large lures, but no numerical lure-weight range is supplied.
