The small 50 FD and 51 FD are intended for trout, perch and chub, with 4.1 kg maximum drag. The medium-sized 52 FD suits perch and zander, the 53 FD perch, zander and pike, and the 54 FD zander and pike. The larger 56 FD is described for zander and pike with hardbaits and softbaits. Models 52 through 56 have 7.2 kg maximum drag, so compare line capacity and retrieve rather than assuming the largest model has more drag.
Yes. The supplier lists capacities for both line types, and slow oscillation provides even line lay with all types of line. Capacities range from 100 m at 0.18 mm on the 50 FD to 190 m at 0.35 mm on the 56 FD. Choose the model by the capacity at your intended diameter and load your own line, as none is pre-spooled.
Every model supports right- or left-hand retrieve and comes with a machined aluminium spool, but no spare spool. Set the handle on your preferred side before fishing and plan around the single supplied spool if you want to use different lines.
No. The 56 FD has a 4.4:1 gear ratio and a stated retrieve of 70 cm per turn. The 5.2:1 models retrieve 54 to 66 cm per turn. Compare the stated retrieve for each model when choosing how much line you want to recover per handle turn.

The Abu Garcia Cardinal 50 family comprises freshwater spinning reels with front drag for all-round lure fishing. Two ball bearings and one roller bearing provide smooth operation during repeated retrieves. Six models, from Cardinal 50 FD to Cardinal 56 FD, offer different line capacities, retrieve rates and drag ratings.
Slow oscillation lays all types of line evenly on the spool. The lightweight graphite body and rotor keep construction weight down, while the machined aluminium spool provides strength without excess weight. Every model allows right- or left-hand retrieve. The finish combines black, silver and red.
The supplier lists the same capacity for monofilament and braid on each model. Compare the stated diameter and length rather than assuming that the proprietary model numbers correspond to conventional reel sizes.
| Model | Capacity, mono and braid | Gear ratio | Retrieve per turn | Max drag | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Cardinal 50 FD | 100 m / 0.18 mm | 5.2:1 | 54 cm | 4.1 kg | | Cardinal 51 FD | 140 m / 0.20 mm | 5.2:1 | 54 cm | 4.1 kg | | Cardinal 52 FD | 120 m / 0.25 mm | 5.2:1 | 66 cm | 7.2 kg | | Cardinal 53 FD | 150 m / 0.28 mm | 5.2:1 | 64 cm | 7.2 kg | | Cardinal 54 FD | 185 m / 0.30 mm | 5.2:1 | 64 cm | 7.2 kg | | Cardinal 56 FD | 190 m / 0.35 mm | 4.4:1 | 70 cm | 7.2 kg |
Cardinal 50 FD and Cardinal 51 FD are small reels for lure fishing for trout, perch and chub. The 51 holds more line at a thicker stated diameter while keeping the same retrieve and drag ratings. Cardinal 52 FD is a medium-sized option for perch and zander, weighing 245 g. Cardinal 53 FD is a medium-sized option for perch, zander and pike, weighing 257 g. Its capacity is greater at a thicker diameter, but its stated retrieve is slightly lower than that of the 52.
Cardinal 54 FD is a medium-sized option for zander and pike, with 185 m of 0.30 mm line capacity and a weight of 275 g. It retains the 53's gear ratio, retrieve and maximum drag while offering more capacity at a thicker diameter. Cardinal 56 FD is the larger option for zander and pike with hardbaits and softbaits. It weighs 388 g and holds 190 m of 0.35 mm line. Its lower 4.4:1 gear ratio still gives a higher stated retrieve of 70 cm per turn. Compared with the 54, it accommodates thicker line at the cost of greater reel weight, not a higher maximum drag rating.
No model is pre-spooled, and no spare spool is included. Choose and load your own line using the capacity figures for your selected model. The stated water type is freshwater.
