Tie the spoon connector to your main line using a strong knot (Palomar or improved Clinch). Bait both hooks with lugworm, ragworm, fish strip, or shrimp. Cast well away and work the rig slowly along the bottom with gentle retrieve and occasional pauses. Maintain bottom contact without dragging too fast — the spoon's vibration does the work.
The rig is available in 40g, 60g, and 80g. Choose based on water depth, current, and seabed composition: heavier rigs maintain bottom contact in strong tide or rough ground, lighter ones suit calm conditions or shallow water. Always use the minimum weight needed to feel the bottom without drifting.
Fresh lugworm (Lug) and ragworm (Rag) are traditional and highly effective. Fish strips — especially mackerel — also work well. Smaller ragworm or peeler crab appeal to smaller species like sole. Soft plastics (shads or worms) add colour and can boost success in clear water. Avoid weak or dried baits; freshness is key.
The spoon works especially well in slightly turbid water or when casting from shore into moderate swell. Sand and silt bottoms benefit most from the disturbing action. Use bright colours (green, red, orange) when visibility is poor; switch to silver or natural tones in clear water. It fishes year-round but peaks during spring and autumn migrations.
