The Okuma MAKAIRA family consists of two-speed lever-drag sea fishing reels. The higher gear retrieves line faster, while the lower gear reduces the effort needed to wind against a large fish. The MK-50II supplier specifically names tuna, large cod, ling, giant groupers and marlin as intended targets. Across the family, choose by line capacity, maximum drag, weight and frame layout rather than model number alone.
The Carbonite Dual Force drag system uses Cal’s universal drag grease. A ratcheting drag lever and pre-set knob provide precise adjustment, while a specially designed thrust bearing alleviates side load at heavy drag settings. Match the setting to your rod and line, not simply the reel’s maximum drag. The proprietary silent double-dog anti-reverse prevents backward rotation without ratchet noise.
Helical-cut 17-4 grade stainless steel gears increase torque and improve gear meshing and smoothness. The drive and spool shafts also use 17-4 stainless steel. The two-speed shifter housing is gold anodized. A patented T-Bar handle with an Easy Roll graphite insert provides a rolling grip, and the heavy-duty stainless steel ratcheting clicker gives an audible indication of spool movement.
The patented spool pin system accepts both monofilament and braid. The spool is cold-forged, machined aluminium with Type-II anodizing. A machined 6061-T6 aluminium frame and forged side plates support the mechanism under load. The frame, side plates, spool, drag lever and handle have a Type-II gold anodized finish, alongside the CRC (Corrosion Resistant Coating) process. These corrosion-resistant finishes do not replace cleaning after saltwater use.
MK-16II, MK-20II and MK-50II have open-top frames with a lug and plug system. MK-30II, MK-50WII, MK-80WII and MK-130II have crossbar frames. The machined thumb rest on the rear crossbar improves hand support. The forged aluminium reel foot and clamp are fully hard anodized for attachment to the rod. MK-16II is the lightest option. MK-20II and MK-30II share gearing and maximum drag, but the MK-30II offers more line capacity at common diameters and weighs more. MK-50II and MK-50WII also share gearing and maximum drag, with the MK-50WII holding more line at common diameters for an extra 102 g. MK-80WII retrieves faster in high gear than MK-130II. Both reach 45 kg maximum drag, but MK-130II holds more line at shared diameters and adds 1461 g. Select the line diameter first, then compare capacity against the weight you want to handle.

MK-16II, MK-20II, MK-30II, MK-50II and MK-50WII have four ABEC-5 precision Sapporo stainless steel ball bearings plus one thrust bearing. MK-80WII has six ball bearings plus one thrust bearing.
Drain holes help water leave the reel, and special ports around the side plate screws reduce water and corrosion buildup. After saltwater use, clean the reel with a soft cloth and suitable reel-care products, following the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. Check the drag, handle and spool before each use and secure the reel firmly to a compatible rod. Do not use damaged equipment. Store the reel dry and remove the line for extended storage as instructed by the supplier. Keep fingers, hair and clothing clear of moving parts, and let children use the reel only under adult supervision.
