An otter board is a weighted board that works laterally away from your boat or shore position, carrying flies far from your drift. Unlike towing flies directly behind you, the otter board angles out to the side, fishing a much wider swath of water and reducing the disturbance near the hull.
The integral ballast weight allows the board to stay upright and stable even when trolling slowly. Without it, the board would flip or ride unstably at low speeds. This gives you control over your fly depth and drift speed, rather than having to maintain a minimum motor speed to keep the board working.
The Minken is ideal for trout, char (saibling) and grayling. It was developed in Norway, where this method has been refined over generations. It works in both freshwater lakes and rivers, and also in saltwater flats and coastal areas.

The Minken folds flat to approximately 32 cm length, 14 cm width and 5 cm depth. It fits easily into tackle boxes, rucksacks or boat storage without taking up much space.
Use a short leader, typically 1.5 to 3 metres, tied to the towing eye of the otter board. Attach your chosen fly patterns to the end. The length depends on water depth and fish behaviour, but shorter is generally easier to manage and gives better fly control.
