Rest the rod horizontally on two rod rests with the tip pointing towards the bait. Push the indicator into the ground below the reel with the line-catching bail open, then position the line between the moving indicator and its upright rod. This arrangement allows it to follow changes in line tension.
When a trout pulls away, the indicator rises and releases the line so the fish can take line without resistance from the indicator. When the fish swims towards the rod, it drops instead. Watch for movement in either direction to detect these different bites.
